Island Adventure -- Carrot Island is part of the Rachel
Carson Reserve. The ½
mile trail loop, marked with numbered posts, will introduce you
to habitats as well as the plants and animals that live in this important
natural area. The trail meanders through mudflats, uplands, and salt
marshes, illustrating the various unique environments found in estuarine
systems. A small herd of feral horses roams the island and over 200
bird species have been recorded here. Late summer through winter offers
great birding for seabirds, shorebirds, marsh birds, and wading birds,
including piping plover, oystercatcher, and terns. Adults $8

Shackleford
Banks Adventure -- The very end of the Cape Lookout National
Seashore. Wild horses from shipwrecks and some of the best shelling
on the east coast; you may find Sand Dollars, Conchs, Scotch Bonnets,
Welks, Queen’s Helmets, Olive Shells, and more. Historical research
and genetics testing indicates that the wild horses descended from a
core group of the old type of Spanish horses. For more information visit:
