As you can see on our map of the local treasures, the wreck of Blackbeard's famed ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, is most likely just off our coast! Many of the recovered artifacts are on display right across the street from the home of Barrier Island Adventures, at the North Carolina Maritime Museum and include a one foot tall bell, the 26.5 inch brass barrel of a blunderbuss (a short, shoulder-fired flintlock weapon), an English sounding weight and a number of cannon balls. About Blackbeard himself, there is little but speculation on his early years. He may have been originally from Bristol or London, England or even the island of Jamaica or Philadelphia, PA. Even his original name is unknown; most documents refer to him as Edward Teach however earlier references indicate his name as Thatch. The earliest mention of Blackbeard by name is in a Boston newspaper of 1717. The exact number of vessels he captured in his pirating career is also uncertain, but there are at least 45 that can be attributed to him. He was killed in a brief, bloody battle with the Royal Navy at Ocracoke Inlet, on Nov. 22, 1718.
